1. Did you paper scrap first or go straight to digital? How long have you been scrapping?
I started paper scrapping when our daughter was turning 18. I thought I’d prepare a lovely book of memories for her and that rapidly turned into four massive books, and a new passion. But it is very time consuming and seems to get spread all over the house, so when I found digi scrapping, I was hooked. I started in 2008, not having a clue what I was doing, but finding many people more than happy to give advice and encouragement.
2. What is your strongest scrapping skill on your layouts? Your weakest?
I am often amazed when I have finished a page and say – did I make that!! I tend to put a lot on a page, and I'm not sure if that is a strength of a weakness, but I adore a full page of vibrant colours and textures, filled with fabulous memories. I love layering and clustering. I struggle with those beautiful minimalist pages, because I love to fill a page and keep adding to it!!
3. What advice would you give someone just starting out digi-scrapping?
Keep experimenting, ask lots of questions, read lots of tutorials, look through galleries. Email other digiscrappers or designers as they are normally very happy to help. My email is katep@netspace.net.au if I can be of help to anyone!
4. Describe how you scrap. What program do you use? Where do you start first? Do you always have something in mind when you start, or do you let your creativity guide you? How long does it take you to complete a layout?
I use Photoshop CS4. I don’t have a fixed method for a layout – I can start with a photo, or a frame, or a paper, it changes all the time – sometimes I pick out some elements I particularly like...then I just let my creativity take off. Some pages may take an hour or two, others come together quickly. I always finish one layout before I start another.
5. What is your perfect scrapping environment?
A quiet house or music playing, can of diet coke, block of chocolate, lots of pics
6. What's your favorite thing to do BESIDES scrapping?
Photography, music, playing with our grand daughter - just enjoying our family - scrapping is SO addictive, it takes up a lot of time, and I normally only have evenings free to enjoy my passion!
7. What is one thing you would love to do and haven't - just so you could scrap it?
I would love a good set of family photos - it is so hard to get, as I am always behind the camera, and the kids are never keen on a photo session! I always use my own photos in layouts, which I print off, so I have loads of fabulous albums of memories for our children, and their children.
8. Is there anyone in the scrapping community who inspires you?
There are so many brilliant designers in our community, I love to work with many different styles and designers. Each designer is inspiring with something different to offer.
9. If you could have Nicole create a kit just for you, what colors, theme, etc would it be and why?
I adore taking photos of our little grand daughter, often with her beautiful mum. Theme - portraiture. Burnt orange is my favourite colour, so maybe a mix of burnt orange, cream, dusty green & brown. Dusty pink is another favourite, which could be an alternative to burnt orange to make it more girlie! I adore grunge. I love flowers, draped with ribbons for adornment with a touch of greenery. I love an unusual rustic element, maybe dried leaves, cream pearls to twine around other elements. I love word art and hunt around to find something special for every layout! Nicole is a brilliant designer and I'm sure she can bring any theme to life.
We also asked Kate to share with us some of her layouts. Just look at her wonderful layouts.
Kate's First Layouts:
MY VERY FIRST ADVENTURE INTO DIGISCRAPPING WAS A SERIES OF LAYOUTS USING PHOTOS I TOOK OF OUR DAUGHTER KELLY. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS DOING, BUT IT WAS SO MUCH FUN, HOW COULD ANYONE RESIST LEARNING MORE!
